Summer Vacation Day 1: Pat the Bunny

Books Library!

First stop the first morning of summer...the library! We were there when the doors opened. Yay! Riley turned in her Halloween books and picked out a few new Disney ones. Isaac got a few of the best looking options from his summer reading list. I picked up the play I requested for my audition in July and then we colored for a bit before we left. We were off to visit Grandpa and his baby bunnies!

We said hi to Grandpa and his dogs first. After a nice visit inside we went out to see the bunnies and chickens. Grandpa's bunnies had three babies. They're adorable. They're also without forever homes, but Mike says I'm not a lot to bring any home. I so want one with every irrational little kid part of my being. I think it would have to be the little brown guy whose ears point opposite directions. He came right up to me while his brothers/sisters huddled in the back of the cage. Sigh...

We had a lovely visit. After a long, fun morning Roo insisted on taking her nap "in a nest." It was a dinosaur nest!

30 Days of Gratitude: Day 23 & 24

Christmas card

Day 23: It might be weird to be thankful for something Christmas related in November, but I am. Sincerity seems more important than seasonal appropriateness during this undertaking. I digress, Christmas Cards! I'm thankful for Christmas cards. What a wonderful tradition. I love making them, so fun! Every year we have fun topping the card from the year before. Last year's "Happy Smallidays" got a great reception. We just finished this year's and I'm so excited!

I love sending them out and imagining the reactions when people see them for the first time. I love that we're adding a little color to some mantles. I like that we're part of the non-stressful holiday mail. I like reaching out in a tactile way once a year to loved ones near and far. It's nice to keep in touch just to wish people a happy holiday. I love getting Christmas cards for most of the same reasons too.

Down Time

As in the kids are down (napping or for bed) and Mom is running her butt off! That kind of "down time" is the only kind I've known for the last 2yrs. When Riley is sleeping or with a grandparent I am like a woman possessed madly trying to get every errand I couldn't (or wouldn't) do with a toddler done.

Today I put Riley down for her nap, waited the obligatory 5min to make sure she had gone to sleep and ran out the door. Again, Mike works from home a lot and he was in the room next to Riley's. I had to get to the post office and the rest of the week's groceries before she woke up. On your mark get set, Go!

I went to the post office first where every handicapped space was taken. I glanced over as I walked by to see all of these spaces were occupied by people reading in the car obviously waiting for someone inside. Really, you couldn't have waited in a different space? The line was long for noon on a Wednesday. I got in line and hadn't been waiting more than a minute when a cranky old man cut me.

He had one letter and generally seemed...well, unapproachable so I let him. When my turn finally came they couldn't help me. So, frustrating, wish I would have known before the hike through the parking lot and standing in line. Jerks. When I go out during the day it is almost always with Riley so I use one crutch and hold her hand or the wheelchair. Because I was unaccompanied I had both crutches today. As I turned to leave my friend's uncle greeted me and without thinking I grabbed his hand to shake it throwing my crutch across the floor. So, embarrassing...

With part of nap time completely wasted I went to the big grocery store across the street. It reminded me of LA, my long lost home. I parked in the underground parking, just like old times. I hopped in an old lady cart and moved at a slightly faster pace than walking towards the elevator. Putt-putt-putt...

Everyone was super nice walking around counters to hand me things, offering to reach things on the higher shelf for me. When I got to the check out to my amazement they had the card swip keypad at my level. Woah. I wondered briefly if I'd accidentally gotten in the "accessible line." A quick glance to my left told me all the check outs had accessible card swips. Neat-O. Upon expressing my joy at this the girl helping me asked if I knew how to get out. She was genuinely concerned since the store was so large I'd never been there before that I didn't remember the way. I refused help out, although I shouldn't have, and went on my way.

I loaded my groceries into the car wondering when oh when curbside pickup will be available here. Again, I had flashbacks of LA as I left my space and searched for the exit. I was careful to pay close attention to the arrows on the way out so, when someone pulling in waved for me to roll my window down I assumed I'd messed up. Nope, he was informing me in a fatherly tone "your passenger side headlight is out, young lady." I guess I'm not in LA.

I made it back with everything on the list and no plastic bags. I forbid anymore of them in my house. I have at least 5 reusable canvas bags, but 3 were lost in the move somehow and I could only find one before I left today so I bought 2 new ones. I had time to put everything away and write this with Riley soundly sleeping. Go, Mom, go.

Naps

When Riley was little she took two two hour naps a day. Sometime after her first birthday she went to one two hour nap a day. Lately, she more apt to either pass the two hour mark or spring up at exactly an hour. It's a variable amount of time. Midday it'll be quiet and I'll have an opportunity to write or clean up in peace.

After my back surgery I always slept when Riley did, but these days I write or lay down and watch TV. I feel horrible guilt when I hear the pitter patter of Riley coming down the hall and I haven't accomplished something.

This week had been rough for me. I have had a lot of pain and fatigue. Mike ended up having to go into the office today, so atypically I asked from help. My mom came and helped with Riley and laundry. It wasn't a day off, but it was a lot less stressful. I suddenly realized as Riley was finishing her lunch that there was no reason to be upright. Riley was happy and eating and Grandma was on stand by to put her down for nap. So, I went to bed.

I climbed into my bed and thought briefly about turning on a wedding show. I decided against it and drifted to sleep listening to my mom reading Riley her naptime story. When I woke up very disoriented I realized it must be late in the afternoon, 2:45pm. I stayed still in bed listening like some forest creature in the brush. I heard no movement and wondered if Riley had woken up and gone somewhere with my mom. It turned out about inspection Miss Roo was still very much asleep.

I stumbled out to the living room where I was informed of my mom's trip to Wal-Mart and quiet browsing the net time. I didn't even feel guilty shortly after when I heard the pitter patter of tiny feet coming down the hall.
