Deck the Halls!

These are our favorite new toys. They're called "Holiday Specs." We picked them up when we got the tree. They make any bright, distant light (like Christmas lights) look like a holiday figure. We got one of each so we have Santa, Snowman, Christmas Star and Snowflake. Completely worth the $2, endless fun. For now we keep them by the the tree, but we'll take them on all our holiday outings.

Holiday Specs Isaac Specs

They are just little paper glasses with plastic lenses. The second picture is Isaac trying them out with Riley's little pink tree. We got it at Target she carried through the whole store she looked like the fanciest lumberjack ever! This was after we put the lights on it, before ornaments. Also, pre-mom's surgery notice the tidy toys.

Decorating Roo's Tree Decorated Pink Tree

There's my fancy girl putting some ornaments on. The finished product was photographed a few days after my surgery (oy! the mess). Cute as it can be, isn't it?

Ike's Tree Ike's Tree 2

Isaac got a regular colored tiny tree. A few years back we got him a live tree for his room. It was a disaster. He confirmed multiple times that this one did not need to be watered. I'll have to get another picture of it with the lights on.

Reindeer Reindeer Lit

Roo with my reindeer that lights up and sings Jingle Bells. He's also a favorite. I got him from Hallmark when I lived in California. It wouldn't be Christmas without singing, light up toys that annoy mom and dad.

Again I'll have to get a good shot of it lit soon. Even so, it's a beauty. The boxes underneath are Mike's DIY tree water-er.

Hardware Removal 2012

Surgical Screw

I refused to think for even a moment about what was happening. I focused on holidays, day to day domestic stuff and well anything else. I gave it the smallest studio apartment in NYC amount of space with a month to month lease. It wasn't a surgical event it was just another thought knocking around in my brain. How'd that work? Well, I survived.

The night before I ran errands, ate a big late dinner of surf and turf (Can you call it that when it isn't lobster?) and drank water until the last second. Generally, we have to rush around before it's light out on surgery days, but this one was slated for noon. We got all the kids dropped off and still had time to kill.

Mike took me to Lowes in my pajamas (and belly rumbling)! We wondered around and picked up some little things. Mike found this pretty fiber optic Santa village, but the display was the last one in the store. We aren't really "Christmas village" people, so believe me when I say this one is special. My socially anxious husband sought out an employee and then waited while he raised himself up in a ladder bucket dealy to grab the box for us.

I was starting to panic (but also highly amused) as we left. "Sorry we're late doctor my husband just had to have a Santa village!" We made it on time and everything ran super smoothly. Through admitting, up to pre-op, checked in and changed by 10:50am. Then we sat undisturbed for an hour surfing cyber Monday sales and joking about being forgotten (a girl can hope).

In an unprecedented turn of events the surgeon was the first person we saw. He bounded in like we were in a coffee shop and marked my hip. They all have to write on you where they're going to operate since that guy lost the wrong leg a few years back. Then he asked if I wanted to go home afterwards. He smiled as he told Mike how he ordinarily keeps people overnight, but I could "handle it" because I'm "tough." I promised to be good. They always say "see you soon", but you don't ever see them because you're under so it's hard to know how to respond. I went with "ok."

It was the weirdest thing, the anesthesiologist appeared, the scrub nurse, the pre-op nurse all at once after all that quiet. I felt like a car descended on by a pit crew. Questions asked, IV in, drugs in IV and GO! GO! GO! I'm not complaining, it was a nice change of pace.

I had to stay in recovery for over an hour because I was cold. 94.4 degrees the nurse said. Weird. They kept covering me with blankets and taking my temperature. She asked about pain and I told her it just felt swollen, but I wasn't allowed ice for a while. It was back up to pre-op once I was living person temperature again. Mike was frazzled. He left to meet Isaac after school, but I had to stay an hour with no problems in order to be released.

It was the fast food style hospital visit, in and out. Strange. It was no fuss all the way around: no lengthy pre-surgery to do list, no scheduling drama, no admission, no begging to be discharged. I think most of my family forgot it was even happening, expect for my poor mom who had Riley last minute and got kidnapped on the way home from the hospital to help out. I also had a super thoughtful friend bring dinner and take Riley for a few hours Tuesday. Thank goodness for them both because the down side to not thinking about it is that I didn't make any plans for being incapacitated.

There weren't any messages or texts waiting for me when I got home (aka before the drugs wore off). so I made "check in" calls to a few people changed my status and passed out. It seems obvious already this is going to be more painful than I expected.

'Twas Tree Picking Night

Roo Xmas Outfit Kids Pretree

Roo in her reindeer shirt. And Isaac's wide smile. For the Christmas-y-est tree they'd go a whole mile!

Car Snack Tree Tent

Away to the car they flew like a flash! Out through the window, maybe over the dash? We spied the newly pitched tent all aglow. It's luster gave us to know, inside was our prize. Our special tree to ornamental-ize.

Tree Inspection

We had a short search. We knew we were right. We loaded the tree bound up so tight. We started engine and heard home's call. Dash away, dash away, dash away all.

Snip Stretch

Freed from it's netting. Stood by the window. We stretched it's limbs fro to await the lights all a-tinkle. Happy Christmas Tree to all! And to all a good night!

Clinically Insane?

Black Friday

Chalk it up to pre-surgery crazy, but after dinner yesterday I went out. Mere hours prior to this ridiculous decision I was making fun of the very idea. My mom left her Thursday paper and after dinner I started perusing the ads. Two things jumped out at me: 1/2 price Christmas dresses and a toy I didn't know existed. A toy that would blow Riley's little mind. I debated about 20mins and then I dragged my tired bones to the car.

I went to the toy store first even though I'd sworn not to shop there anymore. The doors had opened 15min before and at that price the toy was probably gone. I knew it was a bad plan. There wasn't a parking space to be had. It was a parking lot for several stores and not a single space. That wasn't the worst part though, there was a line, in the cold, spanning the store front and continuing around the corner. No freaking way I was waiting in line outside for one toy that was probably gone anyway.

I thought about going home at that point, but resolved to drive by the second store since it was a little less likely to have a line out the door. It was crowded too, but now it was 30min after the doors opened and there was no line out the door. I did notice lots of folks leaving empty handed and I wasn't sure if that was an omen of a second failure.

I was very disoriented between the heat and the massive lines dissecting a store. I wasn't familiar with the layout to begin with. It would have been silly to shop this store on my crutches on regular day, but this was beyond dumb. What was I thinking? Some nice ladies pointed me in the correct direction. I thought the shoppers were being very pleasant to each other, but maybe that's because I came after the initial rush. The kids clothes section was almost deserted, thank goodness. It was just as I snagged the exact dress I was after that I realized I had to pee.

I limped over to toys with my two items, but it was picked clean (of course). I got in line to check out somewhere near the back of the store. The heat and my full bladder were much harder to bare standing still. Now I understood all the empty handed people leaving the store.I actually thought "This is why disabled people don't do this."

As I stood there fighting with myself about whether to stay or go. The lady behind me went to check and make sure we were in the right line. When she came back she brought a manager with her who asked me if I'd like to come up to customer service to check out.

It was still a bit of a wait, but I was so grateful for the reprieve. I was happy to have gotten Miss Roo's brand new beautiful Christmas dress for the same price as I normally pay at my favorite consignment store. I also scored Christmas Eve jammies for big brother. I was exhausted when I got home.

Never EVER again. It was awful for the same reason I never liked pinatas as a kid. I'm too slow for that nonsense.

Thanksgiving 2012

The Table

Centerpiece
Centerpiece Close-up

My paper pilgrims, the kids napkin holders and a Disney print out around some hay and fall flowers. Cool, huh? It turned out better than I expected. It was totally worth it to get "fancy napkins".

The Kids

Turkey Barette Kids

Riley wore her traditional turkey barrette from Craving Cuteness on Etsy. She also wore her sparkly party dress (Yay! Sears clearance). Isaac was thrilled that I approved his red and black dragon shirt. Stylish.

The Bird

Turkey on the Table

This year Mike put the turkey in the smoker (we borrowed it from my brother-in-law for Isaac's party) for 30-45min before putting it in the oven. He pre-cooked the stuffing before putting it in the turkey. He rubbed the bird with fresh herbs (rosemary and sage).

Time to Eat!

Pretty Plate

The plates looked like artist's palettes. My mom's maroon cranberry sauce with slight orange tint. My mother-in-laws green beans and purple mashed potatoes. Mike's yellow cornbread and the muted tones of turkey and gravy. So pretty. So delicious.

The End

Not pictured is the delicious apple pie with caramel sauce Lara and Matt brought. Amazing way to end a great meal. It never ceases to amaze me how these holiday meals come together. Go team! Happy Thanksgiving!

Paper Pilgrims

I got the idea from an Autumn crafts book I checked out from the library recently. They used them as hats. I think mine will just be table decoration.

Materials
  • Black Card Stock
  • Glue Stick/Tape
  • White Paper
  • Colored Pencils/Crayons
  • White Ribbon
  • Gold Tissue Paper/Foil
Pilgrim Pair

Start by cutting out your base cone shape. Click here for the template. I used a stapler at the bottom and a piece of scotch tape at the top. Then you need a collar. Just fold a small piece of white paper in half. Cut a small triangle in the center and put it on the point of your cone. Then you need to cut heads. I used the bottom of the fabric glue bottle to make my circles. Then I used colored pencils to make faces.

You can cut three rectangles for the bonnet. One long and two shorter framing the face. Use a square and rectangle piece of black card stock for the man's hat. Glue the head above the collar on the point of your cone.

Next, cut a large triangle from the white paper for her apron. Tie white ribbon around her waist. To make his belt cut a white strip long enough to go around him, then add a slightly thinner black strip. Once you've got a belt cut a square of gold paper/tissue paper. Then cut a square of black card stock. Lay the black square on top of the gold and cut around the edges to make the buckle. Repeat the buckle for the hat.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Fun & Games

Kids out of school for a week? All your go-to activities canceled because of the holiday? No problem. God bless the internet. I went to Crayola first for some games and coloring pages, then I downloaded a free teachers packet of pre-K Thanksgiving activities. Last but not least, I Googled some big-kid Thanksgiving themed puzzles.

After breakfast, I gave them a basket of crayons and some game pieces to color. I cued up A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and used the quiet time to do dishes, then I let Roo practice her new cutting skills and grabbed our counting bears for "bingo markers". Ready, set, play!

Game Time
Bingo Card Bingo Card 2 thanksgiving bingo bingo calling cup Thanksgiving Memory match

Bingo went really well, I was surprised at Miss Roo's aptitude. We did play bingo at a recent Fancy Nancy event, so it wasn't completely new. I made sure they each had a different card (there are 5 different cards to choose from on the Crayola site). Then I cut duplicates of each card into individual pieces and tossed them in a cup. Isaac won, but we played until Riley had a Bingo too. Everyone was a good sport.

We also played Thanksgiving memory. If you're playing with a big kid, glue the pieces onto card stock before you cut them apart. The printer paper is pretty see-through. Riley got frustrated because she kept picking up the two closest to her, but I think she finished with 3 matches.

After the games I sent them out back to run around while I made lunch. After lunch it was nap/quiet time. Then I had individual activities for each of them. Riley did a "T is for Turkey" tracing sheet and a cut and paste matching letter sounds sheet. I gave Isaac a Thanksgiving word scramble and cryptogram.

Isaac solved his puzzles and Roo got most of her letter sounds right. Mostly I was impressed by how long her attention span has gotten. What a big girl. On top of which, she cut and pasted like a pro! Then my turkeys played until dinner. We had squid ink pasta and calamari, they gobbled it up.
